We have now completed our work with Croydon Council.

Learner's Feedback

Here's some of the feedback we received during the delivery of the training in Croydon:

June 2025

Thank you, Sally and Jo, today’s training was brilliant.  I have written a few words as we went along:

  • Well-paced, delivering material that is complex and high-level
  • Right energy, especially for a remote session
  • Really informative, presented in bite-sized chunks.
  • You recapped/summarised, and you told us what to expect.
  • Very interesting, especially the bit on how the brain works and how we react as humans.
  • Greater understanding of experiences and behaviours
  • Enjoyed the videos
  • Enjoyed the interactive bits – perhaps a bit more in the afternoon
  • Liked that you linked it all to science-based research and evidence
  • You both are very competent and knowledgeable, and the two voices worked very well.

Still Shadey’s video brought a tear to my eye, and I love that it ended on a positive note.

December 2024

This is the course you didn't know you needed. Not just for those working in relevant sectors, but also really relevant for anyone wanting to be more informed around the topic of trauma as well as it's causes and effects. Most importantly, the course will change the way that you approach any interaction, helping to improve your empathy, compassion and highlight that we all come from different walks of life and that you never know what someone has been through or is going through. Sally and Jo delivered the course with so much passion and at a level that was really easy to digest. Full of really useful statistics that helped to support everything that was discussed. No filler was promised and absolutely delivered.

Designed for professionals and community members alike, it explains the core principles behind trauma‑informed practice and why this approach is essential for creating safer, more compassionate systems.

The video sets the stage for the wider series by exploring key concepts, common misconceptions, and the importance of recognising trauma’s impact across everyday life and organisational settings.

🌱 Video 2: What a Trauma‑Informed Approach Looks Like in Practice

This video explores how a trauma‑informed approach is being applied across Croydon, offering a grounded, real‑world example of systemic change in action. It highlights how organisations, services, and community partners can shift culture, language, and everyday interactions to create environments where people feel safer, understood, and better supported.

Through practical explanation and accessible framing, the video demonstrates how trauma‑informed principles translate into behaviour, policy, and partnership working—helping viewers visualise what meaningful implementation looks like beyond theory.

🧠 Video 3: The Science Behind How Trauma Impacts the Brain and Body

This video offers a clear, accessible explanation of the neuroscience behind trauma—how overwhelming experiences shape the brain, body, and behaviour. It breaks down complex science into everyday language, helping viewers understand why people respond the way they do when they feel unsafe, overwhelmed, or triggered.

By exploring the stress response system, brain development, and the body’s survival mechanisms, the video highlights why trauma‑informed approaches must be rooted in compassion, regulation, and connection. It provides a crucial foundation for anyone working with children, adults, families, or communities affected by adversity

🌧️ Video 4: Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

This video introduces the concept of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and explains how early adversity can shape lifelong health, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing. It breaks down the original ACEs study in clear, accessible language and highlights why understanding childhood adversity is essential for anyone working with children, families, or communities.

The video emphasises how ACEs influence brain development, stress responses, and long‑term outcomes—and why trauma‑informed, compassionate approaches are vital for prevention, early help, and systemic change.

🌈 Video 5: The Benefits of a Trauma‑Informed Croydon – Healing and Resilience

This fifth video in the series highlights the positive impact of adopting a trauma‑informed approach across Croydon. It explores how compassionate, evidence‑based practice can strengthen communities, improve wellbeing, and create environments where people feel safe, valued, and supported.

The video brings together the themes of the series—understanding trauma, applying trauma‑informed principles, recognising adversity, and grounding practice in neuroscience—to show how these elements contribute to healing, resilience, and long‑term systemic change. It offers a hopeful, forward‑looking message about what becomes possible when organisations and communities work together with empathy and shared purpose.

🔭 Video 6: Facing the Future – Next Steps

This final video brings the series together by focusing on what comes next for building a trauma‑informed Croydon.
